Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals

Lufia II Player's Guide

by the Icefalcon

Area 1 - Elcid to the North Cave

You will start the game at Maxim's home town, Elcid. Maxim will talk to Tia, Tia will show her usual hinting of her feelings for Maxim, and Maxim will show his usual obliviousness about her feelings. Tia will get mad and run back to the back of the shop; if you want to buy anything from her now, you can.

Next, leave the shop and talk to the townsfolk. When you leave, an old man will stop you at the city limits and tell you to meet him in the cave south of Elcid, where he'll show you the basics of Lufia dungeon navigation. Pay attention to what he says: he goes over the basics of how enemies move, how you can use your arrow to temporarily paralyze them, how switches work, the use of the Reset skill, and other dungeon basics. I will NOT repeat this. ^^; You should probably fight all the enemies in here; they're not difficult at all (8 damage kills a red jelly), and you'll need the experience later.

When you get back to Elcid, Tia has been looking for you; it turns out she's tried cooking the navaroa phantom fish for dinner. After an embarrassing moment (it doesn't taste good), Tia apologizes, and asks Maxim why he's always fighting, a question he brushes off. When you leave Tia's shop, someone will appear and announce that monsters have taken over the cave to Sundletan and that they've stolen the key to the door in the back of the cave. As the local monster hunter, it's your duty to retrieve the stolen key. Head north across the bridge to the cave leading to Sundletan.

  • When you enter the cave, a man tells you that some lady entered the cave despite his warnings about the "monsters going crazy inside." Enter the door, defeat the newt, then go over the bridge. The door right above you leads to Sundletan, through a locked door. There are also Mushrooms guarding the door. If you go right from the first room, you'll see a lizard, a bush, and two doors. The top door is unlocked, and through it are some rooms with minor treasure in them. The switch puzzle in the top room is easy, just pick up one pot and put it below the spikes, then pick up the other pot, stand next to the spikes, and put it on the switch; finally, turn, pick up the other pot, and put it on the switch on the far left. You'll get a Life potion for your troubles.

The bottom door is opened with a switch under the bush. On the left, you'll see a treasure chest surrounded by walls. Cut down the top three bushes against the far left wall and walk left; you'll go through the wall and pop out right below the treasure chest, an Antidote. Go through the door on the right.

In this room, you'll see two doors, two pots, and some bushes. The bushes hide two switches; the bushes hide two switches, so cut down the bushes and put the pots on the switches to keep the doors open. Take the left door first. You'll be in a room with blocks and monsters; push the blocks to fight the monsters and clear a path to the stairs in the middle. Down the stairs, you'll be in a chamber with bats, a switch, and a few jump-down cliffs. Get the treasure chest, then hit the switch to make a bridge appear below. Jump down, cross the bridge, fight the spider; if you're weak after the fight, don't worry about healing yet. Go down the stairs and step on the diamond tile to restore your hit points, then go back up the same stairs. Go down to where there's a crack into the wall, then walk left into the wall. Once you're under the stairs, go up and then down the stairs to get the Hide armor and Magic jar. Go back to the room with the hit point tiles; step on the middle ribbon-like icon to restore your magic points, and step on the star to save. Go up the stairs to fight the boss of the Elcid north cave. It's a good idea to be at level 4 or higher at this point.

    Boss - Lizardman

  • HP - 80
  • MP - 0
  • Experience - 100
  • Gold - 125
  • Fighting the Lizardman doesn't leave you many choices since you're so early in the game. All you can do is keep hitting him and use Potions when you get low on hit points. Potions restore 30 hit points. This is really a simple boss; so simple, in fact, that about half-way through the game Lizardmen are normal enemies.

At this point, Maxim gets the key to the cave, and a mysterious woman appears before him. Her name is Iris, and she tells Maxim that he is destined to travel and save the world. Soon, all hell will break loose, and this is somehow connected to the red ball of light that appeared in the northern skies. At this point you should go to Sundletan. Go up the stairs in the bridge room and through the door; you'll be in the room you WOULD have been in if you'd gone right in the room with the two switches and jars. There are two moths and three doors in this room; you came in the northwest door. There's nothing of interest (yet) in the northeast door, but if you go through it you'll go down some stairs and find yourself at a riverbank. There's a pole on each side of the river. You'll comeback here later. For now, just go to Sundletan. Go ahead and take on the moths now; you're strong enough that you can kill them in one hit most of the time. Go back to the top level of the cave, and now you can open the locked door. Make your way northeast to the next town.

    Things to remember

or, "Okay, I Lied Earlier ^_^;;"

  • Holding down the L button has the same effect as pressing the A button very very quickly.
  • Press and hold L, R, Start, and Select to reset the game.
  • Enemies move only when you move; there are no random battles in Lufia dungeons, you only battle when you run into an enemy on the screen. This means you can avoid any battle you want, except with bosses.
  • Special skills, such as the arrow and bombs, can be accessed by pressing Select and used by pressing Y. Shooting enemies with Arrows will paralyze them for six steps; while paralyzed, they can't move or fight.
  • Switches often control bridges, water level, and other obstacles in dungeons; they can also be hit with arrows from across chasms (and later, with flame arrows, the hammer, and the hookshot).
  • The Reset skill will reset the room to its natural state and will return you to the door you LAST entered from.
  • You can jump down over cliffs with arrows by walking over them.
  • Sometimes doors will only open after all the monsters in the room have been defeated.
  • You can swing your sword by pressing B; this will cut through tall grass, which sometimes hides switches.
  • You can pick up pots by pressing the A button; press A again to set them down.
  • You can turn around without moving by holding the R button while pressing the direction you want to turn to on the control pad.
  • Diamond-shaped tiles in dungeons replenish hit points; ribbon/smoke tiles restore magic points; star tiles allow you to save.

  • Are you ready? Then, let's go on to Sundletan!
